Red Light Therapy

At Solea Wellness, we use a number of highly effective treatments to help you become your best self. One of these treatments is Red Light Therapy (RLT). Let us tell you what it is and how it can be beneficial for your health.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

RLT is a painless procedure that uses intense light from red LEDs to target specific areas of the skin. Red light therapy is used for:

  • General recovery (improved sleep and mood, increased energy)
  • Treating various diseases (e.g., acne, arthritis)
  • Solving skin problems (e.g., wrinkles, scars)
  • Relieving muscle and joint discomfort (inflammation and post-injury).

The procedure is safe and has no negative side effects.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

  • Helps maintain skin elasticity and retain moisture
  • Prevents wrinkles
  • Scientifically proven to help stimulate natural skin rejuvenation
  • There are no side effects and no post-procedure period
  • A non-invasive, non-ablative, natural therapy suitable for those who do not wish to undergo laser or injection procedures
  • Efficient and affordable
  • Compatible with skin rejuvenation programs

How is RLT different from lasers and pulsed light?

Red light therapy, lasers, and pulsed light are all types of light therapy, but they differ in intensity, wavelength, and how they interact with body tissues.

RLT uses a low, continuous wavelength of light that has a therapeutic effect on various tissues without causing damage or problems. It penetrates deeper into the skin than other types of light therapy, making it more effective in muscle and bone rehabilitation.

How does RLT work?

RLT work

Red light therapy affects the cells of the body, specifically the mitochondria. Mitochondria are miniature power plants inside the cell.

Normally, this process slows down over time. Primarily due to improper lifestyle, aging, and other factors. RLT increases the power of energy production within the mitochondria, allowing the cell to produce more ATP.

ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is a molecule that carries energy to other cells.

The more energy the cells receive, the more efficiently they can function, rejuvenate, and repair damage.

What else does RLT impact?

  • It increases the production of nitric oxide, which helps improve blood circulation and deliver nutrients and oxygen to the cells.
  • It reduces inflammation and the production of pro-inflammatory cells (cytokines) while increasing the production of anti-inflammatory cells.
  • Improves cell regeneration and multiplication, which in turn shortens the healing time of damaged tissues/accelerates the healing process.

Who can benefit from RLT?

The following are just a few of the groups of people who may be particularly likely to benefit from red light therapy:

  • Athletes. The procedure can help reduce inflammation, improve muscle recovery, and relieve muscle soreness after intense exercise.
  • Senior citizens. As people age, their bodies may take longer to recover from injuries and experience increased soreness and inflammation in their muscles/joints. Red light therapy can help alleviate these problems and improve the overall quality of life.
  • People with skin conditions. RTL has been shown to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps fight skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne.
  • People with joint pain (such as arthritis). Red light therapy reduces discomfort and improves mobility. Helps with chronic neck and back pain.
  • People with affective disorders. It improves the overall mood, and symptoms of depression and panic attacks (feelings of anxiety) gradually disappear.
  • People with sleep disorders. RTL normalizes the body’s circadian rhythm and improves the production of melatonin (a hormone that is directly related to sleep quality).

Are there any risks?

Red light therapy is a safe, non-invasive technique that does not heat or damage the skin/tissue. Here are some more facts about this procedure.

  • It is FDA approved for the treatment of minor muscle and joint pain, as well as skin conditions such as acne and wrinkles. The FDA has determined that red light therapy is safe for use in these areas.
  • The methodology has been validated by 40 years of practice and thousands of studies. The amount of research data continues to grow. In all that time, not a single case of serious side effects has been reported. On the contrary, RLT has been shown to improve skin condition, reduce pain and inflammation, and promote wound healing.
  • Red light therapy uses non-ionizing radiation that does not damage DNA and does not cause mutations at the cellular level.

As with any therapy, you should consult your physician before using RLT.
